Dover Plains is a hamlet of about 1,300 people in the town of Dover, strung along Route 22. In 1802 the settlement had fewer than a dozen buildings. Almost everything standing here is what the railway built after that.

Behind the hamlet is the Dover Stone Church preserve, a hundred and seventy-four acres around a rock fissure with a thirty-foot waterfall inside it, painted by Asher Durand in 1847. Practically, water is the thing to establish before a design: the hamlet has a small community water company serving around eight hundred people, but wastewater is on-site, so the septic field position sets the limits on where a sink can go.
