How to Choose the Right Bathroom Vanity Size for Your Space

A bathroom vanity that’s the wrong size is one of the more common regrets in a bathroom remodel. Either it crowds the room and makes the doorway awkward to pass through, or it’s undersized and leaves storage and counter space you’ll wish you had back within a year. Getting the size right before you order is a lot easier than living with the wrong one.

Start With Your Bathroom’s Footprint

Before looking at vanity styles, measure the space itself: the full wall width available, the swing of the door, and the clearance you need to walk past the vanity and open any drawers or doors fully. A vanity that fits the wall on paper can still feel cramped if it eats into the walkway or blocks a door from opening all the way.

Single vs. Double Vanity: How Much Space You Actually Need

A single vanity generally needs less width but should still leave enough counter space on either side of the sink for daily use. A sink centered on a too-narrow cabinet leaves no landing space for anything else. A double vanity needs enough total width for two usable sink areas plus a reasonable gap between them; simply fitting two sinks onto a standard single-vanity width usually results in both sides feeling tight. If your bathroom is shared each morning, it’s worth measuring for a double vanity honestly rather than assuming the room can fit one.

Vanity Height and Depth Considerations

Vanity height affects daily comfort more than most homeowners expect. A taller, comfort-height vanity is easier on the back for adults, while a lower vanity may suit a bathroom used primarily by children. Depth matters too: a shallower vanity can free up walkway space in a tight bathroom, but it also reduces counter and storage room, so it’s a genuine trade-off rather than a free upgrade.

Storage Needs Should Drive Width, Not Just Wall Space

It’s easy to size a vanity to the available wall rather than to what you actually need to store. Before choosing a width, think through what the vanity needs to hold day to day: towels, hair tools, medications, cleaning supplies, and whether drawers or cabinet doors will serve that storage better. A wider vanity with well-planned drawers often functions better than a narrower one with a single deep cabinet.

Matching Vanity Style to the Rest of Your Bathroom Cabinetry

Once size is settled, the vanity’s door style and finish should work with the rest of the room. The same door style and finish families available for kitchen cabinetry, including Shaker, Slim Shaker, Raised Panel, Slab, and Beaded Inset, are available for bathroom vanities as well, which makes it straightforward to coordinate a vanity with cabinetry elsewhere in the house. You can browse vanity styles ahead of your visit at our Danbury or Waterbury bathroom vanity showroom.

Why a Showroom Visit Matters for Vanity Sizing

Measurements on paper don’t always translate to how a vanity feels in the room. Seeing full-size vanity samples in person, standing in front of them, and opening the drawers is the most reliable way to confirm a size works before it’s ordered and installed. Our design team can also take precise measurements of your bathroom and talk through layout, storage, and plumbing considerations that a tape measure alone won’t catch.
